Late Summer 2022 update

We are now late into August and at last the rains have come, giving the River Devon some much needed fresher water and helping to begin to fill the reservoirs in Glendevon. Castlehill Reservoir is now full to the crest of the dam, which hopefully will create in the next weeks the opportunity for a few more clearing spates to improve the conditions for the closing weeks of the Trout season and hopefully encourage early runs of Salmon than we have had in recent years.

The Devon has been fishing very well with plenty of reports of decent fish being caught by all techniques. Of note the committee took the unprecedented decision to temporarily close the river to fishing due to the excessive water temperatures we considered was putting fish welfare at risk. Thankfully this was only a relatively short intervention, a quick change in temperature resulted in temperatures beginning to fall and conditions were further improved by the major storm system whcih bounced up and down the Ochils. The committee have reviewed the lessons learnt about this event decision and are drawing up procedures for the future. Hopefully this is a one of event!

There is no news of any migratory fish being caught but sea trout have been seen jumping at a few locations on the lower river

Up at Glenquey fishing has been improving over the summer with anglers catching plenty of fish varying from typical wee trout in the 6oz to 8oz range up to some regular reports of fish in the range of 1lb to 1.75lb:

March/April 2022 58 tickets returned – 152 fish caught – Avg. wt. 5.6oz [max 1lb & min 3.4 oz]
May 2022 58 tickets returned – 168 fish caught – Avg. wt. 6.4oz [max 1.75lb & min 2.08oz]
June 2022 46 tickets returned – 146 fish caught – Avg. wt. 7.4oz [max 1.5lb & min 2oz]
July 2022 26 tickets returned – 53 fish caught – Avg. wt. 9.6oz [max 1.5lb & min TBC]

The draw winners of returned permits for a free Glenquey ticket were:

March/April 2022 Louis Kirkwood of Blairingone

May 2022         Donald McGregor of Alva

June 2022 Angus McPhail of Crossgates

May 2022         Fergus MacGregor of Milnathort

Please remember to complete the catch return, leave in the ticket box by the car park (if it slips your mind just drop us an email) and you might get lucky!

A couple of other items to note:

1. RACKMILL – I had a wee bit of a senior moment early in the summer where I totally confused my north and south. For the avoidance of doubt, access to the path on the south bank of the Devon from the B913 (Dollar – Saline road) at Rackmill is restricted on the south and downstream bank, to allow and facilitate construction works. The south bank can be easily reached downstream at a number of locations by a shallow wade. There are no restrictions on the north bank downstream of the B913. The original post has been updated.

2. DEVONSIDE – We understand that Scottish Water’s contractor are going to be undertaking in scour protection works in the Devonside area (presumably on the north bank at sewage plant outfall) from 29th August 2022, which may restrict access in this area. Unfortunately we have no knowledge of what is involved as the company have not chosen to consult with the DAA. If we become aware of any restrictions we will endeavor to notify anglers with a post to the website.

OPEN – RIVER DEVON SUSPENSION OF FISHING IS LIFTED 15/08/22

Water temperatures were checked again yesterday and showed a noticeable cooling in water temperatures. Taking account of this and the significant (and very welcome) rainfall overnight and this morning, from the series of storm systems have rolled through the Forth Valley and over the Ochils, the decision has been made to reopen the River Devon to fishing from today!

The committee very much appreciate the cooperation of members and visitors in observing the temporary suspension of angling.

IMPORTANT NOTICE – Fishing on the River Devon temporarily suspended – Update #1 Glenquey

Temperature readings were taken on Saturday in the shallows (2 metres from the waters edge) which showed water temperatures being warm approaching 18C. Allowing for the current rapid draw down of water from the reservoir we consider that the majority of water body is substantially below that temperature and the current weather conditions are not a threat to fish welfare.

Glenquey remains open for angling

Water temperature monitoring is continuing on the River Devon and we hope that river fishing will be able to recommence in the near future!

IMPORTANT NOTICE – Fishing on the River Devon temporarily suspended

Like a number of other fisheries in the catchment and further afield, concern has been raised about the impact on fish health caused by high water temperature and low flows. Today members of the committee checked a number of locations on the Devon and found water temperatures even in the shade at or about 19C. The advice provided by River Forth Trust and Forth District Salmon Fishery Board is fishing should stop when water temperatures reach 19C.

Accordingly we have made the tough decision to immediately TEMPORARILY SUSPEND FISHING ON THE RIVER DEVON until further notice, to ensure the well being of all species of fish.

The weather forecast is suggesting a trend to much cooler temperatures with cloud and rain, to quote the latest Met Office forecast for Central, Tayside & Fife:

Outlook for Sunday to Tuesday:

Bright spells with scattered heavy showers on Sunday. Mostly cloudy with showery rain on Monday, perhaps heavy and thundery. Brighter and cooler on Tuesday with a fresh northerly breeze.

Updated: 17:00 (UTC+1) on Fri 12 Aug 2022

Hopefully the combination from Monday of rain, lower temperatures, cloud cover and compensation water from Castlehill, will make the suspension a temporary blip.

Conditions at Glenquey are under review this weekend

Apologies to all our members for any inconvenience or disappointment, but the decision has been made in the best interest of the overall fishery.

Access to the South Bank at Rackmill – Closed

Some may have noticed that the access to the north bank of the River Devon at Rackmill has closed and Heras Fencing erected to prevent access. The DAA have endeavoured to maintain access to the south bank here for a number of years. Members of the committee met the landowner recently, and he confirmed that they had only restricted access to ensure the safety of members of the public during the forestry and construction works currently underway for the next 24 months. He reassured the DAA on completion of the works, access will be reinstated.

There are no restrictions accessing the river from the north bank.

Fishing rod left at Glenquey – Sunday 22 May

Chris Adams has been in touch, via comments under the A823 closure post, that someone left a rod up at the DAA Car Park at Glenquey on Sunday 22nd May. It was leaning up through the deer fence and was still there after 11pm when he left.

Chris is anxious to return it to the rightful owner. If it is yours, please drop Chris a message or contact the DAA, with a description to arrange its return.

A823 Road at Glendevon has re-opened

Please note as of the 9th June 2022, that there are now no restrictions on the A823 at Glendevon and the road is fully open in both directions

Anglers visiting Glenquey should note that the A823 is now closed just north of Glendevon until the 9th June for replacement of the road bridge over the Creich Burn which was washed away a few years ago. There are no restriction for access to Glenquey from the south via the A823/A91 but anglers visiting from the north will need to follow the diversion (via the A9/M90/A91)

2022 FDSFB conservation policies

Members holding an All Species Permit (and fish for Salmon and Sea Trout in Forth Catchment) please note the Forth District Salmon Fishery Board’s 2022 conservation policies summarised in this document:

Please note that Devon is a category C river therefore all salmon and sea trout must be returned.

The Board refer to a very useful info-graphic about the impact of water temperature on salmonoid health/behavior. This was produced to inform anglers why some of the Trossachs lochs were closed to angling when the water temperature rose to excessive temperatures putting fish at excessive risk from angling.
