A pollution near miss

On Wednesday 4th March 2015 with our new season just eleven days off, the Devon and a very lucky driver had an extremely close call.

In the early hours an articulated fuel tanker came off the A977 at Powmill and ended up in the Gairney Burn which is one of our most important spawning burns. The driver suffered head injuries, but thankfully is reported as being stable in hospital.

The good news for the Devon was the tanker was empty and I understand that a fuel spill contractor attended the scene to deal with any spillage from the tanker or from the tractor unit along with SEPA officers.

To the best of my knowledge serious pollution was avoided.

The A977 is a key route for fuel distribution from Grangemouth and has had a number of serious crashes involving fuel tankers between Forestmill and Drum. It is sobering to think what might have happened had the tanker been loaded (the embankment has no barriers and is protected by wooden fences)

Safe passage – Scotland against Salmon farms

The Association have been approached by the campaign group Protect Wild Scotland for support for their ‘Safe Passage’ campaign

They are advocating and campaigning for at the Scottish Government and the salmon farming industry immediately establish :

  1. A Moratorium on the expansion of salmon farms.
  2. A 32km ‘Safe Passage’ zone around river mouths

Anybody with an interest in wild fisheries and conservation in Scotland will be in no doubt of the issues and challenges presented to our native fish at sea from over fishing of salmon prey (often to supply fish farms), coastal netting stations and the curse of fish farm induced sea lice infestations.

There is lots of information here about their campaign:

http://www.protectwildscotland.org/safe-passage/

and there is a leaflet here:

River Forth Fisheries Trust – Anglers map of the Rivers Forth, Teith, Lenny and Allan Water

I am sure that both members and visitors to the Devon will visit other local rivers in the district in particular the Allan, Forth and Teith.

The River Forth Fisheries Trust are raising money by selling Anglers Maps of the Rivers Forth, Teith, Lenny and Allan Water

We have a number of  angler’s maps of the Rivers Forth, Teith, Lenny and Allan Water showing iconic locations on each river. These prints are for sale to help raise vital funds for the Trust to continue work restoring the rivers within the Forth District.

The prints were commissioned and donated to the Trust by Mike Baillie-Hamilton from Cambusmore Estates, the Anglers map was designed and hand painted by artist Peter Yates who was commissioned by Mike to paint this fine piece of art.

The First 250 prints are limited edition which are personally signed by the painter, once they are gone they are gone so make sure to buy your hand signed anglers map soon before they run out.

All money spent on a print is donated to the Trust (minus postage) and used on projects within the District to enhance and conserve the rivers.

Post AGM

During the AGM there was a request from the floor for sight of the DAA constitution and it was agreed that this would be best served by adding to the website.

It can now be found here:

DAA Constitution

I stumbled across a report of the AGM from the very earliest days of the Devon Angling Association, from the Courier of 7th November 1911 [click on the image]

DAA Courier 07-11-1911

Interesting to note that the challenges of 1911 particularly pollution to the Devon and stocking policy are just as current 104 years later !
