DAA AGM – 13th January 2015

The Devon Angling Association held its Annual General Meeting on 13th January at the Royal Arms in Tillicoultry, and despite the foul weather and horrible road conditions there was a healthy turnout of members.

David Mudie, our hard working and dedicated Secretary reported to the meeting on the activities of the Association during the past twelve months. In summary the  issues covered were:

  • After a fine start to the season the long dry summer resulted in increasingly difficult fishing on the river.
  • Only 5 salmon and 6 sea trout were caught, however a number of fine brown trout were caught particularly in the first third of the season.
  • Anglers at Glenquey had a fine season with 389 fishing sessions, of which 242 reported their catches (974 trout caught with estimated mean weight of 0.62lbs which included some fish in excess of 2lb)
  • The Devon was one of the four host venues for the Stirling International Angling Festival’s Five Nations Flyfishing Competition where teams from Scotland, Ireland, England, France and Belgium fished the Devon, Carron, Carron Reservoir and Lake of Menteith over two days. Despite the organisers providing a supplemental stocking of Howietoun trout, the very low water conditions resulted in very few fish being caught. DAA members who assisted by acting as controllers however received master classes in casting and fly presentation by some incredibly skilled anglers
  • There will be work carried out by the River Forth Fisheries Trust to improve the effectiveness of the fish pass at Dollar Weir in the early 2015. The improvements are now designed and a contractor has been appointed to complete the works.
  • The application by CEMEX to extend the existing planning consent for a sand and gravel quarry in Glenquey (a consent that was originally granted in 1964) was rejected by Perth and Kinross Council. The DAA along with local residents, local community councils and Clackmannanshire Council had objected to the scheme. It is to be seen whether CEMEX will decide to appeal the refusal.
  • Fish Legal are acting on behalf of the DAA in matters relating to pollution and fish kill in the Devon caused by Scottish Water’s  Glendevon Water Treatment Works.
  • The DAA engaged the University of Cranfield’s River Restoration Centre (http://www.therrc.co.uk/)  to undertake a survey and report on the condition of the Devon. This was a substantial investment which will be used to inform and assist in improvements to the river to the benefit of the river’s fish and associated flora and fauna.
  • An unidentified fish species has been observed in the river particularly around Dollar on a few occasions. There are suspicions that they are Sparling [  http://www.snh.gov.uk/about-scotlands-nature/species/fish/freshwater-fish/sparling/ ] .
  • The DAA will once again be carrying out two modest stocking of the river and Glenquey. It is likely that from now that the stock fish going into the river will increasingly be sterile triploid fish (this is recognising the advice of the likes of the Wild Trout Trust and likely regulatory advice)
  • The work parties have once more completed another year of hard graft clearing falling lumber (in time for the latest storms!), clearing the spawning burns, building stiles/bridges, cutting paths etc

DAA treasure Alan Armstrong presented the accounts to the meeting and recommending that there was no requirement to increase permit prices.

DAA members from the floor made a number of a valuable contributions to the meeting. This included a discussion on stocking policies and probably of greatest note was a passionate discussion about encouraging younger anglers to the river and how the DAA address some of the associated issues (particularly relating to the safety of youngsters on the riverbank).  As a consequence of this discussion it was resolved that:

  • Junior season permits will be reduced to £5.00
  • The DAA committee will explore in advance of the 2016 season alternative permit options (such as family permits) and how permits are sold to juniors

End of year news

For most of us this is a time for banking the fire, dreaming of next seasons glories and tying those killer patterns that will land that dream trout …….. but our dedicated work party team are still out doing all sorts of important work on the river and up at Glenquey.

This is a really good time of the year to say a HUGE THANK YOU to the work parties. Their work is often unheralded and unnoticed,  but is massively important in maintaining the fishery habitat and access to the water. They routinely:

  • clear blockages to the spawning burns
  • clear the fish pass at Dollar
  • strim access routes along the river
  • remove fallen trees and flood debris from the river
  • clear areas of Himalayan Balsam
  • install bridges across burns
  • install stiles
  • loosen gravel on known redds
  • assist with Fisheries Trust  electro-fishing surveys
  • distribute stocked fish

DEVON ANGLING ASSOCIATION AGM

MIGRATORY FISH – 2014

The prolonged drought through the summer months extended to the very last week of the season and resulted in barely three days of fishing where there was chance of landing a fish. In the end only five salmon and six sea trout were landed. It was a frustrating end to the season as clearly at the season closed there was no shortage of salmon running the river.

For 2015 we collectively need to prey for rain!

On a more positive note a number of salmon anglers reported seeing some very large trout heading upstream to spawn!

DOLLAR WEIR

The River Forth Fishery Trust have appointed a contractor to complete improvements to the fish pass at Dollar Weir which will be completed in 2015. This will hopefully have a positive impact on not just Salmon  migration but also the river’s resident Brown Trout.

GLENQUEY

We are happy to report following a prolonged campaign by local residents led by Malcolm Best,  proposals to extend planning permission for a sand and gravel quarry in Glenquey have been refused by Perth and Kinross Council.

It may come as a surprise to regulars at Glenquey that planning permission was granted in 1964 to win sand & gravels in the valley below the reservoir. The planning issues relating to the most recent application to extend planning are very complex and came to the public domain long before our website went live. The DAA registered an objection to the proposal and have continued to support objections to the scheme.

If the developer decides to appeal the refusal of planning permission to the Scottish Government the DAA will be asking members and visitors  (regulars or otherwise) to register their objections.

Glenquey is a very precious place which anglers cherish and we should do everything in our power to protect!

2015 PERMITS

Permits will be distributed to stockists in early March 2015

LAST BUT NOT LEAST THE DEVON ANGLING ASSOCIATION WISHES ITS MEMBERS, FRIENDS AND VISITORS A VERY HAPPY CHRISTMAS AND PROSPEROUS 2015 🙂

Season end 2014 – update #1

Walter Ramage sent through a couple of cracking photos of a Sea Trout and Salmon from the river

The Salmon looks a cracking fit fish (judging by the Walter’s boot width!).

Not being a Salmon expert I often wondered if some our Salmon begin to darken while in the brackish water of the Firth of Forth waiting for a spate?

Seasons end 2014

Friday saw the end of the 2014 season.

The rain had arrived properly over the previous week creating the first big spate leaving debris high up the bank:

spate debris

This finally brought some fresh fish in to the river, literally just in time and encouraged a lot of anglers out on to the river (a regular was spied at Vicars Bridge just at first light getting a quick session in before work)

Personally despite fishing very hard through Thursday afternoon till just dusk on Friday all I had to show for my efforts were super aggressive brownies attacking my flies normally taking the tail of the fly shaking their heads a bit before letting go. In fact on Friday afternoon it felt more like early September with regular rises of some very big brownies mixed in with splashing of fresh salmon.

I did however get a fright when there was an almighty splash about 20 feet behind me, thinking what sort of ‘zoo creature’ had created that splash I turned but before I could react was almost knocked off my feet by a 10 foot long branch which had spontaneously decided to fall (there was hardly a breath of wind)

evil tree

Perhaps some evil Halloween spirit at work?

Downstream at the bottom of a long pool a heron sat patiently waiting for a bite himself; it wasn’t have much luck either. In the time it took me to cover the pool, a huge brownie had risen a four or five times and three fresh fish jumped for joy right in front of his beak (I guess they had just forced their way up the long riffle below the pool)

I think other more skilled salmon anglers should have had a good week, we await with interest the final tally. Alan Graham certainly had a great final day getting a Sea Trout and a Salmon:

Don’t be shy if you have any nice photos or tales of your salmon season please share!

Now all we need to be doing for 2015 is learning some effective rain dances

A wee gentle reminder ………. please return catch returns at the earliest opportunity please [see https://devonanglingassociation.org.uk/2014-catch-returns/ ]

River Forth Fishery Trust – FINNS update

FINNS you may ask?

Well this is the Forth Invasive Non-Native Species programme run by the River Forth Fishery Trust, dealing with likes of Giant Hogweed, Japanese Knotweed, Himalayan Balsam, Mink etc etc

They are a small team who with the help of a range of volunteers are doing amazing work throughout the Forth catchment.

Read more about their summers work here:

October update

After one of the longest dry spell in living memory, we are at last beginning to see the weather breakdown and some much needed extra flow in the river. We will have to wait and see if it will be enough to encourage Salmon in to the river before the end of the migratory fish season next Friday (30th October)?

Certainly to date we are not aware of any Salmon having been caught, though there have been a few Sea Trout caught and returned. There is no doubt as soon as we have a decent spate there will be Salmon in the river and thankfully the forecast suggest heavy rain for Tuesday and Thursday night into Friday (last nights rain lifted the river about a foot). Fingers crossed 🙂

The final month at Glenquey was very successful for anglers.  The mean weight of trout caught 0.64lbs with each angler catching an average of 4.6 trout per session. Over the season we have record that the average weight of the trout caught was 0.62lbs (just about 10 oz) and on average the visiting angler caught 2.5 trout!

get-attachment (2)

This trout was caught in the last days of the season at Glenquey by DAA member Tommy Outerson on a Black Zulu (his other flies of choice being small Dunkeld, Kate Mclaren, Bibios, PTN, GRHE fly and  small black Spiders)

A thorn in the side of the DAA’s management of our waters for far too many years has been the problems associated with wild camping in Dunning Glen and it’s associated challenges of litter, anti-social behaviour and lack of sanitation. In recent years the DAA have worked with Fossoway Community Council, the affected landowners, Perth & Kinross Council and the former Tayside Police to find a solution with out much progress. In recent years, Police Scotland have been very pro-active in policing the area, which has helped curb the worst excesses but littering in particular remains a huge problem.  On a number of occasions the DAA and Fossoway Community Council have organised clear ups which have generated huge quantities of waste.  This year has brought a new, unexpected and very welcome development ………. Police Scotland have arranged clear ups using the services of the Unpaid Work Team – Community Payback Scheme run by the Criminal Justice Service which has left the Glen looking relatively tidy.

Elsewhere the River Forth Fishery Trust biologist Jo Girvan and members of the work parties have been doing electro-fishing surveys on the upper river and burns. The Fishery Trust have also appointed a contractor to undertake improvements to the Dollar Weir to increase opportunities for fish to migrate upstream (Salmon, Sea Trout and of course the Brown Trout), but this work will be undertaken now in 2015.

The DAA AGM will be held on Wednesday 13th January 2015. As soon as the venue is confirmed we will post details on the website

For those venturing out on the river for the final seven days of the Salmon season, best of luck and for the rest content yourself with the thought that its only 144 (ish) days to the start of the 2015 trout season!

2014 Catch Returns

In addition to the excel/word forms for Salmon & Sea Trout returns, we have added a simple Brown Trout catch return form.

https://devonanglingassociation.org.uk/2014-catch-returns/

Hopefully by next season I will have figured out how to do more complicated forms so all returns can completed directly through the website ………. one step at a time!

Any incidental information you have on the fishery is useful to help inform the management of the River and its tributories!

The 2014 trout season is over

So that is the 2014 trout season over!

Glenquey season finished last week with a number of reports of great fishing, indeed one member became so besotted he visited every day for the last couple of weeks of the season.

Alan Graham was up on the final day of the season on a cracking day

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

and maybe had the last trout of the season from Glenquey, a cracker too!

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

I was out on the Fossoway beats at the weekend, Friday evening despite the rain being excellent ………… I spied two specimen fish but had to satisfy myself with numerous wee hard fighting brownies such as this fella

Late season wee trout

Saturday was beautiful, but I only managed a single trout of about a 1lb which I dropped as I unhooked it, though other anglers I met had a wee bit more success!

Sat 041014

As is customary I took a day of work for the last day of the trout season on the river, a bit of waste as in the morning there something of a maelstrom blowing which eased away to find even the upper river in spate.  I tried for an hour with the trout rod (I know of at least one other angler who persevered for several hours) before heading for home for a stiffer rod and a few size 8 doubles to head down towards Dollar. The river wasn’t quite in full spate but was well coloured and rising. I fished for a couple of hours catching nothing more than an impressive collection of sycamore leaves.

About 4.30pm I packed up and wandered up to Dollar Weir

Dollar weir 061014

There is something special about sitting and watching the weir at this time of year.  There wasn’t probably enough water yet to entice the main run of Salmon to the river, I did spy the occasional slivery fresh run grilse and some larger more coloured fish. Most of the action was from the river’s own Brown Trout ………. a few huge specimen showed themselves and the waves of daft wee trout had attracted the attention of a family of Mergansers.

With more rain to come this week hopefully we will be able to report the first Salmon catches of the season

Salmon and Sea Trout catch returns 2014

It is getting to the time of year that we need to remind holders of Salmon and Sea Trout permits that your catch returns are mandatory and must be returned to the Hon Secretary by the 20th November 2014 (even if nil)

To assist we have added an option to complete your catch return electronically (for the moment using either a word document or a spreadsheet) and return by email.

See the tab 2014 catch returns or https://devonanglingassociation.org.uk/2014-catch-returns/

Though the river is still at bear bones level, I have herd a few whispers of the odd migratory fish in the river. Hopefully we will get a few huge October spates to minimise the number of nil returns!
